CHAPTER♥SEVENTEEN

He was in a perfectly foul mood.

Sam blamed it on being labeled a charity case by the town. Not even his own family seemed to think he could make it on his own. Didn’t they see how hard he’d been working? How much progress he’d made on expanding the crops?

But the evidence of the town’s doubt of his abilities was being delivered right then. Truckloads of supplies were being deposited near the future site of the barn. There was now a stack of lumber off in the distance. Followed by another truck with a special day pass in the window. It was hauling concrete block. People certainly weren’t wasting any time getting this project off the ground.

The thought of a new barn sent a thrill of excitement through his body, but in the next breath, his bruised pride quelled the anticipation. He could have done this on his own. He just needed a little more time. But it appeared time was something he was out of.

After talking with one of the drivers, he learned the barn they were going to erect was going to be the same wood barn that he’d originally planned on building. It was more expensive than its metal counterpart but in the salty ocean air, he thought it would hold up better.

He still couldn’t believe Aster had secretly gone along with the plan. Maybe the town didn’t have a clue about what he’d been up to. It wasn’t like he went in to town and sat down at The Lighthouse to tell everyone in listening distance his business. And maybe he hadn’t been so forthcoming with his family because he still wasn’t sure the expanded crops would grow—the weather could be so fickle. And then there were the market prices, up one moment and down the next. But Aster was at the farm almost every day. He’d confided in her. He’d thought she believed in him. He had never been more wrong.

And now he had to deal with the fallout of blowing up at Aster. He recalled the skittish look on her face. Had he really been that intimidating? He didn’t want to think it was possible. Or had something horrible happened to her in the past? Either way, he felt terrible for scaring her. He’d do better in the future.

With the way things had ended with Aster, it meant he was without a babysitter. He would have to stop working in order to go into town and meet Nikki after school. As it was, he was already behind in his work after dealing with the mayor, Ms. Birdie, and the reporters, who had far more questions than he’d been prepared to answer.

He was standing in the middle of the pumpkin patch, checking on their progress and hoping he’d have some that were ready for sale at the end of the month. He’d made arrangements to have them for sale at the grocery store in town. It wouldn’t be a lot of money but at this stage every little bit helped.
